چکیده

The polaron has been of interest in condensed matter theory and field theory for about half a century, especially the limit of large coupling constant, α. It was not until 1983, however, that a proof of the asymptotic formula for the ground state energy was finally given by using difficult arguments involving the large deviation theory of path integrals. Here we derive the same asymptotic result, E0 ∼ −Cα 2, and with explicit error bounds, by simple, rigorous methods applied directly to the Hamiltonian. Our method is easily generalizable to other settings, e.g., the excitonic and magnetic polarons. The polaron Hamiltonian of Fröhlich [1] is a model for the Coulomb interaction of one or more electrons with the quantized phonons of an ionic crystal. In the course of time it was also seen to be an interesting field theory model of non-relativistic particles interacting with a scalar boson field, and it was widely studied [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9] in both contexts. c ©1996 by the authors. On the Best Quadratic Approximation in Feynman’s Path Integral Treatment of the Polaron

The best quadratic approximation to the retarded polaron action due to Adamowski et al. and Saitoh is investigated numerically for a wide range of coupling constants. The non-linear variational equations are solved iteratively with an efficient method in order to obtain the ground state energy and the effective mass of the polaron. The virial theorem and expansions for small and large couplings...

Binding, Stability, and Non-binding of Multi-polaron Systems

The binding of polarons, or its absence, is an old and subtle topic. After defining the model we state some recent theorems of ours. First, the transition from many-body collapse to the existence of a thermodynamic limit for N polarons occurs precisely at U = 2α, where U is the electronic Coulomb repulsion and α is the polaron coupling constant. Second, if U is large enough, there is no multi-p...

The Holstein Polaron

We describe a variational method to solve the Holstein model for an electron coupled to dynamical, quantum phonons on an infinite lattice. The variational space can be systematically expanded to achieve high accuracy with modest computational resources (12-digit accuracy for the 1d polaron energy at intermediate coupling). We compute ground and low-lying excited state properties of the model at...

Variational study of the Holstein polaron

The paper deals with the ground and the first excited state of the polaron in the one dimensional Holstein model. Various variational methods are used to investigate both the weak coupling and strong coupling cases, as well as the crossover regime between them. Two of the methods, which are presented here for the first time, introduce new elements to the understanding of the nature of the polar...

Polaronic effects in strongly coupled electron-phonon systems: Exact diagonalization results for the 2D Holstein t–J model

Ground–state and dynamical properties of the 2D Holstein t–J model are examined by means of direct Lanczos diagonalization, using a truncation method of the phononic Hilbert space. The single– hole spectral function shows the formation of a narrow hole–polaron band as the electron–phonon coupling increases, where the polaronic band collapse is favoured by strong Coulomb correlations. In the two...
